Stopping a horse. Reins to thighs or hips?
okay. soo…i always thought when you stopped a horse, you pulled the reins to your hips. I barrel race and have been riding for 10 years. Somebody who trained horses told me recently you pull the reins as far down as possible. Then, one of my mom’s friends said you pull them to the middle of your thigh….I’m pretty sure you pull the reins to your hips but now i’m not so sure…
Ok I am a dressage rider but I have shown everything from barral racing to hunter/jumper to pleasure. Your seat is the most important thing when stopping. You sit deep in the back of the saddle and move your legs slightly forward and pull the reins toward your hips at the same time. I have seen and used this method at upper levels of competition for years in all disciplines. After doing this consistently, your horse will stop as soon as you change your seat. Pelvis forward would tell the horse to move forward or faster, pelvis back tells him woah.
