Is black shoe polish ok to use on my horse’s tack?
My bridle is made of really cheap leather and the black colouring rubs off when I wipe it clean. I tried using black shoe polish and it worked amazingly. My bridle looks brand new! Is there any reason why I shouldn’t use it? (It doesn’t rub off or anything.)
Shoe polish coats the top of the leather and does not soak in. It will rub off with contact or friction. That is why you have to polish your shoes regularily – the shoe polish does not dye or actually change the leather’s color, but sits on top of it. So I suspect you will note the color slowly coming off with use. If you’ve used it only on the top of your leather it may be useable, assuming it won’t be in a place where your hands touch much. Reins would be messy as the polish will end up on your hands.
I don’t know if shoe polish is harmful to your horse, or not. I suspect that regular amounts could cause some irritation, but likely is not toxic.
Perhaps ask a shoe maker or leather person if its harmful or not. If it isn’t, and you like the looks, then it’s okay.
You might consider leather dye instead of shoe polish. You can buy this type of dye in most shoe stores or tack stores. It paints on and soaks into the leather and will change the color. It too will come off with time, but it lasts much longer. As long as the leather doesn’t get wet you probably will like the looks of it more than shoe polish. But do whatever works for you as long as you don’t mind the color transfer. Obviously a dark horse will show less than if you have a palomino!
